What is a Fortnox MCP server?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for how an AI app reads data from and acts in other systems. It came from Anthropic in autumn 2024 and is used today by ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Copilot and most AI tools for developers, among others.
An MCP server is the bridge between the AI and the system — here between your AI app and your Fortnox. The server tells the AI app what it can do in Fortnox, receives the question, fetches what is needed and calculates the answer. Without one, the AI guesses or you paste figures in yourself.

How secure is a Fortnox MCP server?
An MCP server that can write to your books should carry the same controls as a person with the same access. This is how we do it:
- Sign-in with Fortnox, not with us. You use Fortnox’s own sign-in and choose the company. The AI app never gets your password.
- Every change is approved in plain language. The assistant proposes, you see exactly what will be sent, and the server sends only the content you approved.
- Sensitive changes need more. A changed supplier bankgiro, a deletion or a send-out needs a human click — for bank details also a fresh Fortnox sign-in.
- Read or write, per company. You choose. A read-only company cannot be changed, whatever happens in the AI app.
- No copy of your books. Data is fetched when you ask and not stored by us.
- A change is sent once. If the connection drops mid-posting, nothing is resent blindly — the service asks Fortnox what happened.
- Hosted in the EU. No data is moved out of it.
MCP, API or integration?
The Fortnox API is Fortnox’s programming interface: what developers use to build integrations. It needs code, keys and a registered integration.
A regular integration moves data by fixed rules — orders from a web shop, payments from the bank. It does the same thing every time.
An MCP server sits on top of the API and lets an AI app use it freely, based on what you ask. No code: you ask in plain language and the assistant chooses what it needs. That makes MCP the right tool for questions and analyses no one can predict, and for work that takes judgement — with you approving.
Hosted service or your own MCP server?
There are open-source MCP servers for Fortnox, and for a technical team that can be a good choice. Running your own means registering an integration with Fortnox, operating the server and the sign-in, keeping up when Fortnox changes its API, and building the controls that stop a change being sent twice or without approval.

Is this Fortnox’s own MCP server?
No. More AI - ChatGPT & Claude MCP is an independent service from a Fortnox integration partner, bought in the Fortnox App Market. It is not a product of Fortnox, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft or xAI.
Can the AI change my books on its own?
No. The assistant can propose a change, but it is shown to you in plain language and only sent to Fortnox once you have approved that exact content.
Can I give the AI read-only access?
Yes. Choose Läsa i Fortnox (read) when you connect, or switch off writing for a company on your connection page. Then nothing can be changed in that company.
What if the assistant proposes something wrong?
Say no, or ask for a change to the proposal — nothing has been sent. If something is already posted, the assistant corrects it with a correcting voucher, as an accountant would. Only the last voucher in a series can be removed, and only once you have pressed Approve yourself.
Do you store my books?
No. No copy of your accounting is stored. Reads are held in working memory for at most three minutes to speed up follow-up questions, then discarded.
Does the company need particular Fortnox modules?
No. The service works with the modules the company has. Ask about something it lacks, such as Warehouse or Orders, and the assistant says so instead of answering with an empty list.
